Its or It's

 "It's", with the apostrophe, is a contraction of "It is". E.g. - "The dog thought it's time for dinner."

Without the apostrophe, "Its" is the possessive form of the word "It". The possessive apostrophe isn't used here, to save confusion with the contraction of "It is". E.g. -  "The dog ate its food."
